The Quizmistress compering over the Lionheart Quiz next week is fiercely northern. I say fierce as regards to her pride, not her warmth. She is full of warmth and charm.

Now, I see the north in rose/lavender tint and cobbles. As a Sussex born southern child, I used to spend early year holidays on the Yorkshire Dales. We’d stay in stony, wood featured cottages, with open fires bursting their warmth into the nooks and crannies of the place. It’s where I first rode a horse, walked for several (days) hours with the promise of an ice-cream and had a tantrum on a tennis court. Later I’ve spent time in the Lakes, lived just outside Manchester for a tiny while – and explored the robust, friendly and wild landscaped place. * I often imagine my heroines walking in Yorkshire. Their boots worn down, their hair flying about and the weather beaten cobbled stone walls the only indication of distance travelled.* See what I mean?

It’s all very romantic and when Quizmistress talks of the north, she sets me straight on a whole load of babble coming out my mouth. But she never sets me straight some of the community bits – everyone together, sense of belonging. Etcetera. Actual community.

So what does this boil down to? Well, I really liked reading about Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire in the paper, the other day.

In a fold of the wet hills of Yorkshire, the communities of Hebden Bridge and Todmorden are at the vanguard of a movement that is picking up momentum across a UK disillusioned with corporate business, government and cuts. It is neither hippy nor New Age, but is made up of ordinary people, old and young, from both affluent homes and social housing.

Call it a sharing revolution. “Community empowerment, social enterprise, co-operative, it has various titles, but it’s quietly getting huge,” said Mike Perry of the Plunkett Foundation, a thriving national organisation supporting such enterprises nationwide. “I don’t think it’s about the recession as such in financial terms; it’s more that it’s made people think about what’s important to them.

“It starts with food, then it’s taking over a shop that’s closing. Then it’s getting fired up about broadband and renewable energy, taking over infrastructure of their community. We’re at the start of what could be a significant movement.”
From the Observer – for full article

This feels it’s how it should be.

As well as print magazines – my heart goes boom – I adore the beauty that is letters, parcels and packages. Since leaving university years ago, when one of my best ladyfriends and I were separated by hills, rivers, mountains and the M25, we have corresponded an awful lot through the medium of post. With absolutely no word of a warning, a parcel full of ripped out bits of magazines, postcards, a letter, some highly desired make up, a haircut proposal and glitter would turn up c/o my postie and upon opening, spill out in a magic flurry of thoughtfulness and loveliness. Sounds soppy. Is soppy. But there aint nothing better than a friend thinking of you and sending you a physical bundle of hugs.

This particular ladyfriend is now in the land of AUSTRALIA, so her parcels are to be packed with chocolate and Sunday newspaper supplements. Maybe a tea bag, some fabric scraps and a vest top from Uniqlo. Quite possibly glitter. Because there’s always glitter. And the customs guys will appreciate it. Anyway, it’s a shame she isn’t still living in London, as she’d be able to get some mail festooooooned with the beauty of these here stamps – which I am going to bulk buy. Because post is brilliant.

You can buy the Royal Mail stamps here The Mint Stamps come to you in pristine condition and feature original outfits from our ten chosen design houses, beautifully shot by acclaimed fashion photographer Sølve Sundsbø

Whenever I read about magazines, print, THE FUTURE of these things, independent publications and ‘what women want to read’, I always – of course – prick up my ears/eyes and read with interest. I guess now you could say that Lionheart is part of it all – it’s in newsagents, shops etc. But then I wouldn’t say – and I know I’ve said this many times before – I ever spend time pondering over ‘What Women Want’, I just put together what I’d like to read and what inspires me and then (myself and my contributors) chat about whatever it is, on completely the same level – not talking up, down, or around. Actually, there are no levels at all – it just comes instinctively, easily and with a little spirited hope that you’ll find the subject/style and substance interesting. And, it really is – 100% independent. Built on lion like faith in you, me and THE FUTURE of these things.

These two articles particularly struck a chord:

Firstly, Tom Lamont: Full article

Magazines will always have a place on people’s shelves’
Mainstream magazines might be struggling to survive against digital media, but their independent counterparts are thriving

Tom Lamont
The Observer, Sunday 15 April 2012

Magazine enthusiasts trade publications at a Printout event in London. Photograph: Antonio Zazueta Olmos
In the basement of a London bar, gathered like a resistance movement or thralls to some secret perversion, 100 people have come together to discuss their passion for magazines. They particularly like the independently made, keep-it-on-your-bookshelf-afterwards type of mag, but organisers have encouraged the aficionados to share any and all new treasures they’ve found, regardless of subject or appearance. So long as it’s made of paper and ink.

Fittingly, the event is known as Printout; it takes place roughly once every two months. On a bench by the entrance, new arrivals – designers, journalists, students, assorted enthusiasts – are asked to put down what magazines they’ve brought along. Fan, Meat, Shoestring, Ctrl+Alt+Shift, Arty, Buffalo… Quickly, the table is covered with colourful titles, and at the end of the evening, after presentations by visiting magazine-makers as well as a bit of boozy mingling and lots of jokes about font kerning and paper density, departing guests will pick the publication that catches their eye and take it home.Con’d

And then, this weekend -Eva Wiseman – Full article

How time stands still in women’s magazines
Women’s magazines are still offering us the same take on weddings, weight and work that they were a decade ago. Is it time they evolved?

Eva Wiseman
The Observer, Sunday 13 May 2012

I suppose it’s like a failing relationship. That final morning where you wake up and lie staring at the ceiling until the alarm goes, and the first thing out of your mouth is a hoarse “It’s over.” It feels like a shock, until years later you look back and join the dots – those silent car journeys, the misunderstandings, an odd summer evening where something sort of happened – and you see the path of change. Of things going wrong. Women are at that point, I think, with our magazines.

Flicking through one of June’s glossy women’s mags is like entering a time machine. You look down at a page and lose a decade. The brief for a women’s magazine’s celebrity interview requires that the writer include information about her diet, what she’s wearing and who she’s going out with. Sometimes this is relevant; often it is not. But it suggests that their ideas about what a woman should be today appear more limited than ever. As if we’re looking at women from a long, long way away.

One piece begins: “Between working, writing, moving to the US, dating inappropriate men and making sure to test-drive every cocktail New York City had to offer, I really hadn’t given myself a chance to catch a breath.” Reading it, I feel the tension of the millennium bug settle upon me once more. I hear Geri Halliwell singing “It’s Raining Men”. Not only are we in a world where Sex and the City is our go-to “glamour place”, but the horror of its second spin-off film is but a twinkle in Carrie’s eye. I mean shoe. I mean Manolo. I mean kill me, please, and quickly.

Turning the page, a feature about brides’ “Big-Day Budgets” from £500 to £500,000 could have been written at any point in the past 10 years. Any time but now, when our poorness makes it seem a bit gauche, when our living standards are declining at the fastest rate since the 1920s. When the hysterical bride has been parodied on every TV channel, the image of their princess dresses so rife we see them on our inner eyelids when we blink.

One of Lionheart Magazine’s spectacular writers – Jessica Furseth, has just moved to San Francisco from London, to live and love in the sunshine for one month. She’s documenting her trip on her website. Here’s an extract.

Down the rabbit hole

Day 10

“You’ve got to tear down the old before you build the new. You’ve got to lose your mind before you find it. Let go. Give Up. Throw out all those old plans and stick your face in the here and now. Whether this works out, or it doesn’t. I’m a free man.”

I was climbing up Russian Hill, one foot straining ahead of the other, trying to put my finger on it. I’m not lonely, I’m not bored, I’m just … it’s like my head is empty. I was so knackered when I got here, so starved for sun, so to be able to just get some peace and quiet, and some light – it was everything I wanted, the only thing. And now … when I got here I said it felt like my brain was being overhauled, like a clogged-up old computer. I guess what’s happened now is that I’ve reached the point where I’ve been wiped clean. I can practically hear the echo.

I went up through Macondray Lane, the inspiration for the Tales of the City book series, which I read after I got back from San Francisco the first time and left me unable to function for the duration. A couple of parrots kept following me, in Ina Coolbrith Park, on the Greenwich Street steps, in Sterling Park. I ate my chunky strawberry ice from Swensen’s while edging back down the hill, trying not to picture myself tumbling down the neckbreaking slope. By then a frosty fog had engulfed the city to the point you could no longer see the top of the Transamerica Pyramid. I went into City Lights Books where I came across Joan Didion’s Slouching towards Bethlehem, her 1968 essay collection about life in California during a decade of social revolution:

“I went to San Francisco because I had not been able to work in some months, had been paralysed with the conviction that writing was an irrelevant act, that the world as I had understood it no longer existed. If I was to work again at all, it would be necessary for me to come to terms with disorder.”

Of course, what I’m doing is not particularly rebellious; walking the streets of San Francisco for a month is not exactly trail-blazing. But in terms of what I set out to do, in my life, it has all the markings of a tiny revolution. Of course, I never sat down to define what my intention was, but I think I am recognising it now that I see it. Whatever it is, it’s happening.

I walked around in City Lights for a while, running my fingers along spines in the bookshop the Beat poets built, remembering how much time I used to spend doing that; just how much I used to read. I can’t remember the last time I bought a book, and until that moment I wouldn’t have thought I wanted anyone else’s voice blending with my own, in my head. But things are changing fast now that it’s quiet, and there’s room for new thoughts and new ideas. Finally, now that I have taken out the trash.

“When logic and proportion / Have fallen sloppy dead / And the White Knight is talking backwards / And the Red Queen’s ‘Off with her head!’ / Remember what the doormouse said / ‘Feed your head!’”

Morning Lions!

Happy Friday to y’all. Sorry for the complete lack of posts – alas! I have come up with a plan and believe – I have been working tremendously hard on issue two, which is due in JUNE. So that’s pretty darn exciting! I can tell you, it’s just gawjus. GAWJUS!

So anyway, as the sun is out and I have just flung my washing out on the line in the hope it will not become wetter in the rain – it’s going to be sunny tomorrow apparently by the way – why not celebrate sunshine and adventures!

Issue 1 superstars, Bill and Bec – were super popular with you chaps, so let’s have a little photo update. Since Lionheart one came out the beauties have been travelling around Europe in their incredible truck. Fabulous!

So, if you know/would like to advertise in Lionheart Magazine – please let me know at lionheartmagazine@gmail.com Rates are good, scope is pretty. See stockists.

Words & Photography by Akeela Bhattay

Ever since I first discovered Lako Bukia’s collection on the catwalk, two seasons ago, I have been a keen follower of her work and have tremendously enjoyed the presentations of her distinct designs. So, I was very eager to see the unveiling of her Autumn/Winter 2012 collection at London Fashion Week.

Before the show began, I decided to take a peak backstage and see the production being put together, where already a crowd of journalists and photographers had descended, snapping away with their cameras and tapping their pencils on their notebooks. An overcrowded room doesn’t half make for a clammy atmosphere, so the arrival of jugs of water and glasses, was a welcome offering.

Rehydrated, I meandered through the crush of press, seizing some shots of the models being plucked and primed, ready to take on the catwalk. Hair was firmly swept up into a rigid high ponytail, secured with a metallic barrel accessory, and together with the fierce fabricated eyebrows, resulted in an explicit space age-y like or sci-fi-ey manifestation. With time being an unforgiving adversary, make-up artists and hair stylists often have to work together, on one model, at the same time. It was no different here, and I admired how organized and calm they appeared to be. Even the designer herself appeared to be content with the process thus far, though when I mentioned to Lako that she looked relaxed, she laughed and said, ‘I’m really not, I’m very nervous!’ I wished her luck and she told me to expect something different – a surprise on the catwalk. I was intrigued, to say the least!

A buzz of animated chatter filled the show space as we took our seats, and I overheard several guests enthuse about the designer’s past collections. Anticipation for the show to commence was clear. But just when I thought the time had come, at least a dozen extra guests rushed in and we were asked to ‘budge up’ and make space. Suffice to say, there was no room to move and my view was partly obscured by the tall folk I was most inconveniently sandwiched between. Of course, they had lengthy branches and top-notch professional dSLR cameras too, so my camera and I were instantly made redundant. Still, I braced myself for a shiny show and hoped to grab a few decent shots.

The audience shushed as the house lights dimmed and the flood lights breathed their shocking bright light. On to the black and argent backdrop and runway, gently traipsed along a fierce looking model, sheathed in a silver gown with a flowing train – a sight that summoned a union of captivated reconnaissance from the audience and thus began a song of clicking and flashing and oohing and aahing. Next, emerged a striking model adorning a long silvery pencil skirt, paired with a long sleeved chiffon blouse, baring triangular shards of leather. Immediately I was taken back to Lako Bukia’s Autumn/Winter 2011 show, where the use of those opposing fabrics was characteristic of that collection. Had Lako reverted back to her original inspirations, I wondered excitedly.

Like her Autumn/Winter 2011 collection, Lako Bukia’s 2012 collection has been inspired by a common Georgian belief, that misfortune awaits one that looks into a broken mirror, together with her experiences within the fashion industry; a cut-throat menacing world, which she has honed the strength to survive and succeed.

These qualities translated to the use of juxtaposing fabrics; sheer, delicate and strong, complex construction techniques and signature silhouettes. The broken glass motif featured on many a piece in the collection, on jacket sleeves, midi pencil skirts and skinny trousers. The advent of the skater skirt matched with the long-sleeved chiffon blouse, with the silver insert and structured collar, brought with it the stamp of Bukia’s signature style and one of my favourite outfits in the collection. This was followed by a variant of skater dresses in chiffon, shirts in leather and shirts and jackets in what appeared to be lambs wool (or a similar looking fabric). As always, the collection was accompanied by the designer’s very own bespoke shoe selection. The heels especially, deserved the mutual admiration of the crowd; a stack of acicular shapes created a mesmerizing display as the models strutted over the catwalk.

With elongated appendages reaching out in front of me, I was almost robbed of the sight of the finale approaching. Lako Bukia consistently impresses with her ultimate offerings on the catwalk, so missing it would be a damn shame. This time, we were rewarded with the presentation of a stunning chiffon gown, long-sleeved with a sheer top, embellished with silver shards resembling a shattered mirror and a lavishly layered skirt which, swept elegantly over the catwalk as the model proudly sauntered across towards the photographers’ pit.

Then, Bang! And my heart leapt to safety. But alas, we were all quite safe I realised, as with it, the startling sound serendipitously released a shower of confetti and it suddenly occurred to me that, that was the surprise. I must confess, I loved it; it brought with it, a real fun element to the show and suggested the same for the collection.

With her Autumn/Winter collection Broken Mirrors, Lako Bukia delivers a wardrobe for strong women, women who aren’t afraid to face their fears or the challenges that come their way. They are aware of life’s complexities and know they must and will conquer harsh situations and overcome bleak times. This is intrinsically reflective (excuse the pun) in Lako Bukia’s latest designs and the designer herself. What her Autumn/Winter collection conveys, is that she is far more confident about her ideas and in her exceptional abilities as a designer. I believe Lako Bukia is fast on her way to triumphing within the commercial market, and without compromising her edgy, Georgian inspired and avant garde foundations.

Written & Illustrated by Emma Block

This year everyone at London Fashion Week seemed to be getting in touch with their inner child; or maybe it was just the high cost of child care that lead to so many under-fives on the front row. There were a lot of shows where the presence of these youngsters felt inappropriate, due partly to that fact they’re taking up a lot of front row space and also that a lot of shows include some highly revealing (completely see through) outfits, but at Fam Irvoll’s show it made perfect sense.

This was Norwegian-born Fam Irvoll’s very first time showing a London Fashion Week, although her quirky outfits have already been big a hit with the likes of Katy Perry, Marina Diamandis and Lady Gaga. As the lights flashed on and off like lightening, I had no idea what to expect, and I certainly wasn’t expecting the Ghostbusters theme tune. The catwalk is invaded by, admittedly non-threatening, monsters; prim skirts grow scales and boggle eyes and jumpers sprout feelers. Floaty dresses are teamed with bright tights and monster print creepers. Both the clothes and the model’s make up were a riot of colour; pale green, purple, yellow and pink. As if the model’s own brightly painted features didn’t make enough of an impact; they wore sunglasses with fluttering eyelashes and huge flake lips clasped between their teeth. The models were having a great time; blowing kisses and swishing their knitted tentacles about. Two blond models with white and pink dip dyed dresses walked the catwalk together holding hands. The outfits were accessorised with the kind of big squidgy character backpacks that you dream of having as a kid.

Most designers save their most show stopping design for last, but Fam Irvoll saved a surprise for last. Out came the most adorable little girl modelling a pink and green Fam Irvoll creation. As she retreated down the runway, and another little girl emerged: their pure joy was infectious and it was grins all round from the audience. They wore onesies, wellies, yellow lipstick and the kind of bunches and twisted buns that that I was obsessed with at that age. They look completely at ease, like this a sleep over and they’ve just found Mum’s makeup drawer. A girl in pink leggings and a grey coat featuring an elephant ‘s head came out and all three of them danced, giggled and bounced with excitement, as the rest of the models paraded down the runway. As Fam popped out at the end to applause, I feel like we are thanking her for inviting us into her cute and kooky cartoon dream world.

I couldn’t tell you why I don’t like the font, Helvetica. I just don’t. I also dislike the word ‘vat’, escalators, revolving doors and also, I need time alone in my life. Really alone. I love it, always have, always will (I imagine that would be said in a Texan accent- True Romance?). Ever since the ‘wildness’ of youth, sitting behind diamond detailed, suburban windows, I’ve deemed alone time, my most precious. For this enforced solitary time, there can be a soundtrack. Many times it has, and continues to be, the mellow, comforting tones of Martha Tilston.

Martha Tilston dislikes banks, offices and anything that takes her away from what she loves. She loves music, her family – including her rounded bellied, pregnant new member; peaceful and cocooned in the notes she plays. It’s her heart. That’s where she plays everything from. Strike a light! A cliche! Mai oui! But it’s as true as my dinner is quiche with purple sprouting broccoli. From the garden, no less.

Last night, we sat on the floor in silence, with the sounds of Martha Tilston wrapping us up with lullabies, stories and truths we already knew. In our hearts of hearts. She was so happy, it radiated from her and was catching, as if the joy of spring’s early blossom was being blown upon us. Love.

Song after song, we were treated to the thinkings of the girl from suburbia. Now nestled in the rotundly gorgeous world of Cornwall, Martha is concentrating on the things that make her tick, contented, but conscientious. Between songs, she was chatty, relaxed and friendly. Her cover of Portishead’s Glory Box was a delight – the strings replicated with vocals from her and the participating audience. Artificial – running from the world of offices, was as refreshing as its sentiment is and Seagull was and is, a beauty.

For those that share a love of music, life and celebrating that spark inside us all. That thing that makes each of us unique. Glowing, wonderful and beautiful – are those powerful little words that go with Martha’s live show. A wide open space, with flowers and the ocean as its border.

Corrie Nielsen was a show that held a great deal excitement for me; it was my first show of the new season and my first ever in the BFC main show space.

I got papped in the queue to get in, which is always a good start, and once I was inside I discovered Akeela and Hels already seated (I’m not sure how they managed that one). I took my second row seat.

The lights dimmed and the show began. My expectations of this show were that it would be Scottish and beautiful, and it was both. Nielsen looked to her family’s Scottish family heritage for inspiration, and this shone through in not only the use of tartan, but in the palpable sense of history and power. The garments were highly structured and beautifully tailored; predominately in black white and red, and in some cases styled with knee high socks and loafers.

The models had pale skin and strong red lips, with a tartan pattern painted across their faces like a delicate veil shading their eyes. Their hair was pulled back off their faces and fashioned into a minimalist and regal knot. Crisp white shirts and tailored heavy tartans contrasted with voluminous black tulle. The headpieces were particularly striking and exquisitely crafted; my favourites were those featuring long, swishy, partridge feathers.

The sense of history, culture and craft culminated in not one but two show stopping dresses. One black and one white, both elaborately constructed and fit for a queen. Seeing one pass in front of the other was as mesmerizing as watching a total eclipse.
