That place. You know it. The pretty one, where the hair is wild and the world is vibrant. Perfectly matched to that passionately beating heart. Young love, nostalgia, pondering minds, whatever it is, it’s as delicate as a bubble teetering on the edge of destruction. This haven of sorts, inhabiting mid-distance looks, lipgloss, swinging hips and tight shirts, is of course encapsulated by beautiful, pastel coloured, dream pop. A genre of fantasies, time gone by and whimsical scratchy photos.

Denver based band,Tennis are just about to release their robustly gorgeous new album, Young And Old. With a candy voice care of Alaina Moore, leading the way, the guitar strumming and comfortingly rhythmic drumming, scoops you right up and pops you onto a bike/sailing boat, straight to a sugary place. Dreaming is the utter elation at this occurrence. Take Me To Heaven is throwing caution to the wind as you stay out after dark – possibly overlooking a city’s bright lights. Travelling, the road trip to endlessness. Darling! It’s all California Dreamin’, floating sleeves and hearts longing, celebrating their union.

However, we all know heaven can only last so long, see: Petition and High Road, with their defiant beat and less hazy vocals. These perhaps show the most obvious influence from The Black Keys’, Patrick Carney, whom the band worked with in Nashville. Guitarist, Patrick Riley – husband of Moore – and drummer, James Barone break free from their sepia spectacles, for the rawness of trouble in paradise.
Despite its wink to the past, the varying tempos, emotions and tone throughout the album, make for a thoroughly modern and fun, relationship. Pop!
Tennis release their album, Young And Old, on February 13, on ATP Recordings.
The first single from the band’s sessions with Carney, Origins, is out now as a Digital Download on ATP Recordings. A double A-side release accompanied by another new track Deep In The Woods. Here is the latter – not on the album – but a swell one all the same.
